In the Wild A Family Devotional Through the Book of James

Theme Verse:
“Be doers of the word, and not hearers only.” — James 1:22

Life with Jesus is not lived in safe, controlled environments. Faith is formed in the middle of pressure, uncertainty, conflict, temptation, waiting, and everyday life. The book of James gives us a practical picture of what authentic faith looks like when life gets messy.

This devotional is designed to help individuals and families spend intentional time with God throughout the week. Each day includes Scripture, reflection, discussion prompts, challenge, and prayer.

Whether you read it alone with a cup of coffee in the morning or gather your family around the dinner table at night, the goal is simple: grow a faith that lives well “in the wild.”

Week 1 — Trials Grow You

Scripture: James 1:2–12
Big Idea: God uses trials not to break you, but to form you.
Memorable Line: “God doesn’t waste your wilderness—He grows you in it.”

Day 1 : God Is Still Working

Read: James 1:2–3
Trials are never fun, but James tells us to see them differently. Hard moments can grow our faith and teach us endurance. God is not absent in your struggle—He is working through it.

Talk About It:
What is something hard you’ve had to go through?
How can hard moments help us grow?

Family Challenge: Encourage someone in your family who is having a hard week.
Prayer: God, help us trust You even when life feels difficult.

Day 2: Ask God for Wisdom

Read: James 1:5
When life feels confusing, God invites us to ask for wisdom. He doesn’t get frustrated when we come to Him with questions. He generously gives direction to those who seek Him.

Talk About It:
What is something you need wisdom for right now?
Why is it important to ask God for help?

Family Challenge: Spend one minute together silently asking God for wisdom.

Prayer: Lord, give us wisdom to follow You in every situation.

Day 3: Don’t Quit

Read: James 1:12
It can be tempting to give up when life gets hard. But God calls us to remain faithful. Endurance means continuing to trust God even when the answers don’t come quickly.

Talk About It:
What makes people want to quit?
How can we encourage one another to stay faithful?

Family Challenge: Write down one area where you want to keep trusting God.

Prayer: Jesus, help us stay rooted in You when life gets tough.

Day 4 :Growth Takes Time

Read: Romans 5:3–4
God often grows us slowly. Just like a tree doesn’t grow overnight, faith grows through seasons of patience and trust.

Talk About It:
What are some things that take time to grow?
What might God be growing in you right now?

Family Challenge: Plant something small together or water a plant as a reminder that growth takes time.

Prayer: Father, thank You for being patient with us as we grow.

Day 5: Nothing Is Wasted

Read: Genesis 50:20
God can bring purpose out of pain. Even when we don’t understand what He is doing, we can trust that He wastes nothing.

Talk About It:
Have you ever seen good come from something difficult?
How does trusting God change the way we face hard times?

Family Challenge: Share one way you’ve seen God work through a hard season.

Prayer: God, thank You for using every season to shape us.
